Plain weave is the type of wire cloth most commonly used. The warp and woof are spaced at uniform intervals, crossing 1 over and then 1 under in alternation. Meshes 8 to 20 are mainly used as the bottom wire nets of cylinders in paper, pulp and slate manufacture.

Modified plain weave is used mainly in the upper wire nets of cylinders in paper, pulp and slate manufacture. This modified plain weave has horizontal intervals that are somewhat longer than vertical intervals.
